Preliminary results of the survey on carbon capture, use and storage technologies and their promotion in Kazakhstan

Within the framework of the scientific and practical conference “Promotion of CCUS technologies in the context of the Partnership Program Green Bridge”, which was held on March 10 this year, and is aimed at decarbonization of the economy of Kazakhstan, dissemination of knowledge and technologies within the framework of the Partnership Program Green Bridge, the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects (hereinafter - the Center) conducted a survey on technologies of carbon capture, use and storage and their promotion in Kazakhstan.

Preliminary results of this survey show the relevance of the topic of CCUS technologies among respondents, the need for their more detailed study and elaboration in Kazakhstan and the willingness of business to participate in this work. Also, the majority of respondents note the need for a coordinating body and ensuring well-coordinated interaction between industries.

In this regard, as noted during the Conference, the Center is ready to offer its platform and the potential for further decarbonization of the economy, dissemination of knowledge and technology, as well as the promotion and implementation of CCUS projects in Kazakhstan.

Thus, 50% of the participants believe that the issue of awareness of CCUS technologies and the possibilities of their use requires more detailed study and elaboration.

At the same time, 40% of respondents believe that CCUS technologies are necessary in Kazakhstan, and 56.4% note that a single platform is needed where you can get information about all green technologies and choose the most suitable ones.

49.1% of respondents note discussions and study of the possibilities of implementing CCS technologies in Kazakhstan at the level of individual industries. At the same time, 47.3% of participants consider it necessary for such discussions to have a coordinating body and ensure coordinated interaction between industries.

Regarding the issue of readiness to support and participate in CAS implementation projects in Kazakhstan, the situation is presented as follows:

18.9% are not ready to participate;

11.3% are ready to participate and provide a platform for existing enterprises;

62.3% are ready to take part in the work as experts;

7.5% - can provide experts and / or provide financial support.

The following are identified as the main risks of the introduction and implementation of CCUS projects in Kazakhstan:

- high cost of technology;

- lack of innovation infrastructure;

- lack of a STV market;

- technological complexity;

- possible increase in the cost of final products;

- poor awareness of technologies and their advantages;

- issues of storage and further use of carbon dioxide.

In addition, for a wide audience coverage, this survey was conducted on the profile pages of the Center in the social network.social networks, in particular Instagram stories. 

So, according to users, the problem of awareness of CCUS technologies and the possibilities of their use requires a detailed study. Also, more than half of the survey participants suggested creating a special coordinating body that will deal with this issue.
